SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

Working alongside schools to create spaces where staff feel equipped and students feel safe, connected and able to thrive

Ascent helps schools and colleges understand behaviour, support emotional regulation and build stronger relationships across their communities.

Through trauma-informed and positive psychology training, Insights Discovery and practical leadership development, we equip students, staff teams and education leaders with tools they can use every day.
READINESS TO LEARN

Learning becomes possible when people feel safe, connected and understood

Schools and colleges are more than places of learning. They are emotional ecosystems in which everyday interactions, relationships and routines influence how students and staff think, communicate and respond.

Trauma-informed practice does not mean diagnosing trauma or removing appropriate expectations. It provides a more informed lens—helping staff remain curious, respond consistently and combine clear boundaries with compassionate support.

When we look beyond the behaviour, we can respond to the person more effectively.

The invisible backpack

We all carry an invisible "backpack" filled with our past experiences, including traumas. This backpack can feel heavy and affect how we navigate life's challenges. By understanding the impact of trauma, we can learn to unpack it and develop resilience.
What might be carried into learning?

The invisible backpack

Select an experience to explore how it might influence learning, behaviour and relationships.

The backpack is a reflective metaphor. We cannot know what a student has experienced simply by observing their behaviour.

01 Selected experience

Change and instability

Repeated change can make routine, predictability and trusting relationships especially important.

What educators might notice

Anxiety around changes, repeated questions, difficulty moving between activities or distress when familiar routines alter.

A calmer, more helpful response

Make routines visible, explain changes early and provide one clear and manageable next step.

Guiding principle Create predictability

Behaviour alone cannot tell us what a student has experienced. Trauma-informed practice does not replace appropriate boundaries, accountability or established safeguarding procedures.

SELF-AWARENESS AND TEAMWORK

Stronger staff relationships support stronger learning environments

Education teams work under significant pressure. Different communication styles, priorities and approaches can be valuable—but without shared understanding, those differences can also lead to frustration and misunderstanding.

Insights Discovery is a memorable, accessible self-awareness framework based on the psychology of Carl Jung. It uses four colour energies to help people understand their preferences and recognise the strengths that others contribute.

Every person has a unique combination of all four colour energies. The purpose is not to label people, but to create greater awareness, flexibility and choice.
HIGH CHALLENGE–HIGH SUPPORT

Lead with clarity. Challenge with care

Education leaders carry responsibility for standards, culture, safeguarding, staff wellbeing and change—often while managing considerable pressure themselves.

The Liberator gives headteachers, senior leaders, middle leaders and managers a practical framework for leading people with both clarity and compassion.

It helps leaders understand their impact, approach difficult conversations constructively and create an environment in which people know what is expected and feel supported to succeed.
